Soon after being back from studies, I decided I could use an upgrade of my main computer, which used to be an AMD K6-2 350. I ended up buying all the components, new case, mainboard, CPU, 256MB of RAM etc. etc. and putting them together myself. The mainboard (Abit KT7) uses a VIA chipset that has a known bug in the IDE subsystem, thankfully I went the SCSI way and thus avoided any trouble. About a year later, I upgraded the RAM to then-huge 768MB. Thanks to the amount of RAM, this box would be ok even now. I'm actually considering retrofitting the box with a SATA controller, and making it a fileserver - I'd only need to buy several huge SATA disks and configuring software-RAID, plus NFS/Samba etc.
